(Special) Why I’m NOT Proud to be a SM Stan

Ahh, SM Entertainment. You have brought countless joy to the masses (even all the way to Timbuktu without the help of the Internet). You brought us Shinhwa, H.O.T, M.I.L.K., BoA, Dong Bang Shin Ki, Super Junior, Girls Generation, and a bunch of other nobodies to the forefront and made us think they’re something special. You made us believe in 90s cheese music again.

The tl;dr version of this is that: the SM fans are extremely petty, stupid, and they make mountains over mud puddles. And I’m ashamed to be even associated with them. There are those who are not that way, of course, but … I think it’s important to point out their issues.

Now, I’ll admit – I am very SM biased. I’ll get up and do my best vocal rendition of “Replay” and I’ll do my best dance version of “Sorry, Sorry” that I can muster. I buy their CDs (and repackages). I cry that I can’t make it to the SM Towns. I envy those who get to get pictures of Lee Teuk’s nostrils. I literally scream for Henry Lau and Girls Generation though I lead the illusion that I am about to hit my mid-20s very soon. I always love listening to their music for the specific reason that they’re an escape from my shitty life. SM gives me the illusion that maybe I could walk up to Sunny and we can go just go bbubuu all day every day.

But maybe that’s dangerous that they do it. In the ending of the first of 100 versions of “Happiness”, you can see Super Junior holding fucking signs that said, “FREE HUGS!” And they proceed to hug everyone – including the security guards who probably didn’t know who the fuck they were.

“Oh, these guys want to hug me? Uh, okay..? I better get overtime.”

And then we never hear from them again. Okay, that’s obviously an exaggeration (one of the few flaws Korean Beef has) but the point is that maybe the idea of being able to hang out with Onew over some Gamjatang has warped into something horrifying and obsessive.

Like any smart company, SM Entertainment cashed in the fame of these nobodies by creating these fanclubs. I suppose to give the fans a sense of belonging since their school days essentially makes them stay for up to 12 hours a day. Supposedly, they’ve only recently made it so the grade school kids don’t have to attend Saturday classes.

That’s insane!

So I understand that the students (grade, middle, etc) need something extra in their life to look forward to for entertainment. And that’s, I think, is the basis of everything that’s wrong with how it’s being handled. Of course, the United States still has its own ways to go. That’s not the point though. The point is how insane these fans are and how extreme they can be.

And, well, they do a lot of stupid shit. What gets me is that SM Entertainment know what they’re doing is fucked up but they don’t do anything about it. They just let it escalate out of control to where it’s acceptable for fans to pressure each other do to more in order to: 1) shock to impress oppa/unnie 2) shock to impress other fans at their “dedication” 3) prove to themselves in their own mind that they are worthy in their idol’s eyes 4) other psychological issues I probably haven’t even touched or have gone near.

Korean Beef always have issues with fanclubs – that isn’t a secret but it’s important to know that this post is not just going to be about Korean fans but International fans as well. SM Entertainment is (somehow) becoming a name in the world because of the Internet. And to be fair, apparently, there are those groups of fans who do indeed respect the artist but it really feels like it’s far and few in between.

I’ve prattled on long enough. Remember: this is all that I can think of and what I’m aware of. Feel free to spam the comments with your thoughts on how I don’t understand the true spirit of sending death threats or trying to get my ass get run over or whatever.

Se7en and Taeyang preparing to listen to my radio show.

I mentioned a few weeks ago I was going to appear on a friend’s radio show. It turns out it’s going to be a continuous thing so if you’re sure you’re not going to tune in on Fridays at 6PM Arizona time on the UAT Radio website, be sure to listen in on this website and even subscribe to the podcast.

Want a Chance to Listen to One of KPOP’s Best Writers?

Jay Park, we meet again.

Because of my pessimistic views on Jay Park and his scandal (and KPOP in general), I have been invited by a close personal friend of mine to be on her live radio show basically do what I’ve been doing on Korean Beef – bringing truth to the masses. The first episode will be on October 29, 2010 (Friday) at 6PM Arizona time on UAT Radio. I will be known as DJ Sunny Days because I’m obsessed with astrological shit.

If you’re unsure about time, here is a world time converter I feel like sharing with my readers. I will mention Korean Beef, so, if you’re a fan of my posts – especially the epic Jay post, then you will probably enjoy this broadcast.

What will be talked about is what happened with the Jay Park scandal as well as my thoughts on 2PM, Jay Park, and probably other things. Expect them to be in tathers.

Outsider is a “Protagonist”

Outsider solemnly poses while getting endorsements from Korean insurance companies.

One of the few quality K-pop artists left, Outsider is due to release a new album on October 26th named Brotagonist (주인공). The owners at Korean Beef usually treat all Outsider releases as breaking news, but unfortunately this man is so talented we stay in a coma-like shock for 72 hours at a time whenever we see his face. A reasonable amount of debate goes on between whether it is Protagonist or Brotagonist but we prefer Brotagonist, because we like the message “anyone can be a bro.”

Moving away from the feminine, serene look of his second album Maestro and his gentleman looks in The Outsider, the talented rapper this time around has polka-dot pants clashing stylishly with a fedora hat; in other photos a retro look akin to greasers. Either look could have finished it off with a feather in the hat to make the masses of Koreans swoon. Even crazy Korean and Overseas fans cannot deny this man is oozing with powerhouse talent.

Below is the upcoming tracklist for this epic album release:

01. Hit Me (Feat.Illinit)
02. 주인공 (Feat. Lmnop)
03. 가면무도회 (Feat. 박미경)
04. Go Go Sing (Feat. 웨일)
05. 이별할 때 필요한 자세 (Feat. Kuan Of All That)
06. 피에로의 눈물3 (Feat. Rimi)
07. 소년이여 (Feat. 샛별)
08. Skit
09. 진짜 (Feat. Sunday 2pm)
10. S.O.B (Feat. 지백, San-E)
11. 롤러코스터 (Feat. 요한 Of 피아)
12. 선물 (Feat. Keikei)
13. Everlasting (Feat. Curious, Sunday 2pm, Keikei, Lmnop, Kuan Of 블록버스터)
14. 세상 밖으로의 항해 (Feat. L.E.O, Keikei)
15. 꿈의 대화 (Feat. 주변인)

Lee Hyori the “Ambassador” of Korean Beef

“This is the happiest moment of my life! It’s been building towards this!”

We never thought it’d happen, but it did. Lee Hyori has become the spokesperson and ambassador for Korean Beef. It’s the first thing she has ever officially become a spokesperson for, and also acknowledges it as an honor. Looks like we’re going to start slapping pictures of Lee Hyori on everything here.

Lee Hyori even made some qualifying statements on becoming our new spokesperson,

“It’s my first time becoming an ambassador for advertising purposes. I’ve been in the industry for awhile but just never got the opportunity to become an ambassador. I really love Korean beef so I’m happy to do this. I want to be part of spreading Korean beef to the world. I hope more people can eat Korean beef and become stronger through it.”

She even admits she dropped the sexy look through Family Outing, saying she was pleased to become ambassador since “everyone loves Korean Beef.”

We’re inclined to agree. Thanks for choosing the best K-POP blog, Hyori Lee! We knew only the Queen of K-pop was good enough for us.

(Special) The Elf Has Nothing On Stupidests.

Ballin’ the Middle Earth.

Jay T. Park. One never knows where to start when writing about how a person from Seattle, Washington to the charts of Korean pop music. One writer would go to great lengths to get a hold of a star’s profile – from his baby pictures, to the day he skinned his knee on the jungle gym, all up to the day he left for Korea with dreams of stardom. However, you will not find it here because this writer neither cares and is too lazy to look all that hubbub for you. After all, with the fans at his disposal, I’m sure each and every one of them could recite everything about his life. No, no, this article isn’t going to be talking about his triumphs. This article is going to only going to explore the darker side of Jay Park. Or as some beefcakes would say, the human side. All I can tell you is that this elf has nothing on the famous and stupid fans that sta–follow him when it comes to sheer blatant attempts to take advantage of people’s emotions and their wallets.

As with any other scandal, we need a backstory. We need to answer those questions that linger in the back of your mind.

“Who the hell is this elf and why should we care about him?” “Did Legalos become Korean or something? Tolkien is rolling in his grave!” “What’s there to eat?”

(special) Korean Beef: Year in Review

All the debauchery and deliciousness of K-pop can never be filled in a single post — nay, not even a single blog (Poopseoul, Seoulfarts, ALL KRAP and Omonassholery are just a few of these gossip hubs). After extensive polling, searching, plagiarizing, whining, forgetting about blogging, eating pizza and being stuck in the kitchen all day slaving over a hot stove have we finally come to you with this year’s highlights, overrateds and just plain shitty.

Behold, Korean Beef’s year in review!
